Below is a fascinating tv documentary on the gay scene in the U.K in and around the early 1980's. The documentary simply called Gay Life was filmed just a year before the explosion of A.I.D.S and the tragic loss of many gay men's lives. With quite a bit of film footage captured in London's popular Heaven night Club, we hear from gay clubbers who quite casually boast of their weekly sexual conquests and the rampant promiscuity that took place around that time, but soon came to a sudden halt with the arrival of the H.I.V pandemic. And one subject that was up for discussion among the clubbers was that with all the promiscuity and the many one night stands that took place around that time, were young gay men able to establish long term gay relationships. Those Heaven scenes are in the early part of the video, but I've pushed it on to the start of an interview with Oliver Frey, the great erotic artist who was apparently co publisher of HIM Magazine. And it was on those magazine pages that he featured lots of his wonderful work featuring characters like Rogue and Bike Boy. And when you look at some of the images as featured here, particularly of the younger promiscuous lads in their ripped t-shirts and tight jean shorts, they seem like fantasy figures, like young men you'll rarely see in the real world. And in several of Oliver Frey's story lines the boys become served up desserts at Roman orgies as well as playthings for hungry butch leather Queens. I always keep a couple of links in the side banner linked to Oliver's site pages where much of his work is available to purchase. And it's pleasing to know that he does sometimes visit these pages as he did with my previous blog. ZACK ART HOME PAGE HERE THE ART OF OLIVER FREY MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST OLIVER FREY |
